I recently have this HTC HERO phone and found that the drivers cannot be loaded for Windows 7 from the Phone itself, so I manually taken out the drivers from XP.

From Windows 7, you need to go to Control Panel -> Device Manager

Select the Problematic Driver (Android Phone and HTC Hero, one at a time), then Update Driver

Then Browse and Point the to the targeted directory and it will update the drivers automatically for you.
