The Incredible Human Journey

Sunday 10 May
9:30pm - 10:30pm
BBC2
1/5 - Out of Africa

Where do we come from? How did our ancestors colonise the world? How did their journeys change us? Ridiculously big questions to answer, yet chirpy anatomist Dr Alice Roberts (Coast, Don't Die Young) doesn't seem in the slightest bit daunted. She starts in Ethiopia where, four million years ago, the first human-like creatures evolved and from where, 70,000 years ago, a tiny group of pioneers left Africa - with the result that every single person in the world who isn't African is descended from them. How astonishing is that? Through simple experiments and experiences, she finds out about our ancestors' lifestyles and why they thrived: the ability to communicate and sweat are two reasons. It's an accessible and satisfying examination of the origin of our species.

BBC2
2/5 - Asia

Anatomist Dr Alice Roberts follows in the chilly footsteps of our ancestors who left Africa 70,000 years ago for Siberia, one of the coldest places on Earth. Not that they knew that's where they were going at the time. And judging by the harsh lifestyle of the contemporary Siberian nomads she visits, they'd have turned back if they knew what lay in store. But what puzzles Roberts most is why - if we really did all descend from just one small band of homo sapiens - do the world's populations all look so different from one another? The Chinese have a controversial theory that they don't share our ancestry but, although she listens politely, she's not convinced. But then neither is the team of Chinese geneticists she subsequently meets.

Europe. Episode 3.
Dr Alice Roberts travels the globe to discover the incredible story of how humans left Africa to colonise the world. When our species first arrived in Europe, the peak of the Ice Age was approaching and the continent was already crawling with a rival: stronger, at home in the cold and even, contrary to their popular image, brainier than us. So how did the European pioneers survive first the Neanderthals and then the deep freeze as they pushed across the continent?

4/5 - Australia

It's one thing trekking from Africa to Europe, but how on earth did our ancestors make the long and dangerous journey to Australia? And when did we arrive Down Under? Frustratingly, these ancient travellers left behind precious few artefacts (and not a hint of a prehistoric raft), so dating their movements is tricky. But plucky Dr Alice Roberts isn't put off. She endures blistering heat, an annoying number of flies and a precarious water crossing to find out. Much of what she finds is inconclusive, although DNA samples and a clever computer program that shows climate changes going back 70,000 years throw up revealing information. And, however unlikely it seems, she's now convinced that Aboriginal Australians, just like her, are descendants of that first group of humans in Africa.

5/5 - The Americas

How did Stone Age people reach North and South America? Dr Alice Roberts discovers evidence for an ancient corridor through the Canadian ice sheet that may have allowed those first people through. But some very ancient finds in southern Chile seem to suggest a very different way into the Americas; an ancient human skull discovered in Brazil even points to an Australasian origin of the Americans. Could a route from Australia across the Pacific have been possible?
