'We have set out in this volume 10 attempt the impossible, that iS to illUstrate all of the globular cacti popularly collected by enthusiasts and to give them their correct scientific name. Our concept of the term 'globular' has had to be expanded womewhat ot avoid excluding the increasingly popular genus Echinocereus, which contains only a few truly globular members but without which the book would be of greatly reduced use to the average enthusiast. On the other hand, to avoid including the fairly large genus Trichocereus, which mainly contains large columnar plants with ver restricted appeal, we have adapted a narrow generic concept. This has enabled us to include the globular plants of the genus Echinopus in its old restricted sense without also including Trichocereus, which is now generally united with Echinopsis but which is seldom seen as such in seed and plant lists.

We have also taken the difficult decision to maintain familiar, long-used genera such as Lobivia (now included in Echinopsis) and Notocactus (now included in Parodia). However, we should point out that not all professional and amateur botanists working on the Cactaceae accept the current conservative trend towards uniting genera in this manner.'
