Torrent description

Atrium Musicae de Madrid was founded in 1964 by the Spanish monk Gregorio Paniagua, and in the 1970s-1980s released a series of unparalleled recordings of music from Spain and elsewhere. Their recordings of Ancient Greek music and of folias are available on CD, but most are no longer in print. I have most of their work on LPs in excellent condition and am uploading 24-bit, 44.1 kHz transcriptions using an analog rig that is near state-of-the-art. The arrangements, performances, and recordings are all of the highest quality and are well worth checking out, if you are able to make use of 24-bit audio files.

This torrent is a transcription of the Harmonia Mundi LP HM 1050, featuring compositions by Gregorio Paniagua in the folia dance rhythm. This celebrated album is considered by some (including yours truly) to be one of the best audiophile recordings ever made. It is also the release in which Paniagua finally went 'round the bend. The pieces are scored for the usual eclectic mix of instruments used by the Atrium Musicae de Madrid, as well as toy gun, jaw harps, air leaking out of balloons (the colors and shapes of which are specified in the liner notes), pocket synthesizer, church tower clock (gorgeously recorded), mechanical bird, and a bewildering array of percussion instruments. The "sources utilized" include a very small watercolor painting, the Spanish night, a fluorescent reverie, a minister of public works, and a strange array of more identifiably musical sources. By contrast, an impressive collection of scholarly resources from the 16th to 20th centuries are gathered under the heading, "Sources Not Utilized."

This recording is currently available on CD, but the SACD release is now out of print. Since the CD is only the standard 16-bit/44.1 kHz, I think a 24-bit transcription of the LP is in order. If you don't have the equipment to interpret 24-bit files, you really should buy the CD instead, which is available for a very reasonable price.

I have left the two LP sides intact because Gregorio Paniagua's compositions should be enjoyed as integral wholes. The liner notes claim that the recording was made in June 1980 by Jean-Francois Pontefract, but side B was supposedly composed in 1981, so I'm guessing that applies only to side A. The torrent includes a PDF file with scans of the liner notes, including the instrumentation for each track.

Bon appetit!
