Standalone use: First and foremost, the OSD vocabulary can be used in a stand-alone XML document to declare dependencies (conditional relationships) between different software components for different operating systems and languages. The OSD file provides instructions that can be used to download and install only the required software components depending on the configuration of the target machine and what software is already present.
Accompanying aan archive file (e.g. JAR or CAB): The OSD vocabulary can be embedded inside an archive file, such as a Java Archive (JAR) file or a Cabinet (CAB) file. In such circumstances, the OSD should provide a list of additional dependencies required for installing a piece of software, accompanied with optional installation instructions for how to use any files contained in the archive.
Referenced from HTML: Often HTML pages that require additional software to be downloaded and installed for viewing the page. In these cases, an HTML author can use the OSD vocabulary to define the dependency graph for the different software modules that are needed. Primarily, this would be accomplished by pointing to an OSD resource from an OBJECT tag or an APPLET tag.
Automatic Distribution: This is probably the most interesting scenario: \"push\" applications can use the OSD vocabulary to automatically trigger downloads of software. In these scenarios, the OSD vocabulary provides the necessary information so only the needed software components are downloaded and installed. For example, for push applications that use the CDF proposal, a CDF file (based on XML) may directly include the OSD vocabulary to point to software dependencies. Other software distribution environments such as Marimba\'s Castanet may use OSD files to describe which software packages an application depends on.
