SYNOPSIS:
Siddhartha is the disarmingly simple story of a young Brahmin, and his search for a meaningful way of life. This search takes him through periods of harsh asceticism, sensual pleasures, material wealth, then self-revulsion and eventually to the oneness and harmony with himself that he had been seeking. Siddhartha learns that the secret of life cannot be passed on from one person to another, but must be achieved through experience.

"This film of frequent lyrical beauty was wonderfully filmed by Ingmar Bergman's regular cameraman, Sven Nykvist, and 25 years later, the film holds up in its tranquil exploration of one's inner self. While the film fails to capture the essence of Herman Hesse's book (who was virtually rediscovered through this film), it looks extraordinary and is a real character study in the purest sense of the word. Exquisitely shot on location in India by reclusive American director Conrad Rooks, this picture came to the screen at a time when Hesse's book was still very much in vogue on US college campuses. Originally published in 1922, but not given an English translation until the 1950s, Siddhartha, its search for meaning, and its spiritual journey in the East spoke directly to the concerns of 1960s youth. Though critically lauded, the film's commercial success was limited at a time when America was suffering from war-torn images of Vietnam, and American cinema reflected a new sense of violence and truth. It was not the era of spiritual fulfilment. Twenty five years later, Siddhartha reminds us of the power of its eloquence and lyricism, though its message may seem even more quaint today than originally.
